Embracing the Heat

Last week was again filled with many activities and lots of memorable moments.  I am amazed that another week is over already and that I only have one week left here!

For Children's Class on Monday, we studied the topic of "Doctor," and I was lucky that a doctor friend was visiting just before English Class started.  I asked him to stick around for a couple minutes and talk about his role as a doctor.  The students were very engaged as he went through the vocabulary and enjoyed meeting this real-life British Doctor!

The students and I had lots of fun playing many different games while learning the doctor vocabulary.    Some favorites were bandaging a partner with toilet paper and playing a "tag" game while making ambulance noises.   The students and translators also split into two teams and created a doctor comedy skit using the vocabulary they learned.  It was wonderful seeing everyone become involved in the lesson activities.

Adult's Classes went well also on Monday and Wednesday.  For class on Monday, we learned about different places around town and played a board game with the goal to make it through the town first.  If the player landed on a "town building," then they had to describe what the building is used for or a time they visited this building.  The class seemed to really enjoy the game and the conversation practice that came with it!

We also covered the topic of "Occupations" on Wednesday.  We discussed a variety of occupations and the joys we find in our own work.  One favorite activity was describing an occupation based on a picture to a partner and having the partner guess the occupation.  I was very impressed by the students' ability to play this game and their desire to continue playing it!  Their English conversation skills are definitely improving as they practice more.

They tell me the weather here is the hottest it has been in ten years - and I believe it!  To stay cool, we decided to have club at the swmming pool on Tuesday, since it seemed most of the kids would be there anyway.  We enjoyed jumping into the water, taking underwater pictures, and racing down the waterslide!

On Wednesday we took a bike trip with club to a village with another swimming pool.  At one point on the trip the trail was a bit difficult for me (I found out later I may have been riding with a flat tire...), but the group stuck together, and they were a huge encouragement to me!  I realized how compassionate these kids are and the support they give each other.  We all really enjoyed the quick rides down the hills and, of course, jumping into a cool swimming pool in the middle of another hot day.  Thursday we had club at the church, and to beat the heat for the third day, we had a waterballoon war and went through over 100 waterballoons!

Thursday morning I also had the wonderful opportunity to join my friend at her work to teach an English class!  My friend works at a center for adults with disabilities and mental handicaps.  We played the English Alphabet Board Game with the Conversation Ball - two favorite activities that I was able to combine to create a game that mastered everyone's strengths!
Teaching English

On Saturday, I joined a good friend and her mom to the city of Olomoc.  We spent the day walking around and touring the city.  This city is beautiful and very quiet in the summer because many people who live there are university students who are away for the summer!  It was a unique sight to see so many buildings and only a few people walking along the same street, but I really loved the time we spent together.  I became ill on Sunday with the 24 hour stomach flu; however, I was grateful it was only one day and by Monday I had bounced back to almost normal!  This week should continue to be hot weather, so we will embrace the heat for another week!  There are so many things I would still like to do here this summer and people I wish to spend time with, so I am praying God opens posibilities to share this last week with many friends and create more memorable moments.
